What does beguine even mean anyway?
According to Dictionary.com, it means: Starting a business is like dancing, in a way. There are very many small steps to be learned, which when executed together will produce a desired final result. And a beautiful one, if done correctly.
Amy Lindgren of Prototype Career Service advises in this article that before anything else, you should ask yourself why you want to be an entrepreneur.
Once you know the reasons why you want to be in business, you can narrow down your business ideas to one that may be right for you, or even create a business idea based on your motivation.
For instance, if flexible hours are important to you, running an internet-based business out of your home might make more sense than opening a retail store. If you thrive on interaction with other people, that retail store might be a better choice.
If you aren't sure that you want to build a business from the ground up, maybe a franchise is a better idea. See what Kent Capener of Business Owner's Idea Cafe has to say about choosing between a start-up and a franchise.
In my case, the business idea came about on one of my many (thousand) visits to Mexico. I travel there very often and I have established contacts there who are able (and willing!) to help me navigate the business world. I love to shop for handcrafts and am running out of room in my home for more, but I still keep buying them. I know how to recognize a good quality item and bargain it down to a fair price. While on a shopping spree in Now, is that in itself a solid business plan? No. But it was the start of an idea that could be built upon, and so I began the beguine.
