Two weeks ago I told you that I would be setting up a home office network, and I finally I have it up and running.
It did not seem like a difficult thing to do. I went out and bought a router, which took only about 45 minutes to set up on my desktop computer. I was immediately able to access the internet from my laptop, so I knew I had configured the network correctly.
So why then, every time I tried to access a folder from one computer to the other, did I get an error message saying "XX is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." ? Now, I know I have permission, I'm the administrator on both computers. Time to hop on the internet and look for an answer.
It appears that this is a very common problem with Windows XP. There are hundreds of messages posted to forums and groups on the web asking this same question, and just as many opinions as to what the possible solution might be. If you have been getting the same error message, you aren't alone. Read on.
Some of the suggested fixes were too complicated for me to understand, or involved making changes to the registry...something I definitely did not want to touch. Microsoft's instructions were no help. I had already performed these steps and I still couldn't access my folders. You would think that the wizard function would have set everything up correctly, but it hadn't. I continued to search.
Finally, I hit upon a discussion thread at annoyances.org. I have to give kudos to these folks for drilling down and getting to the root of this issue, with a solution that was very simple to implement. It was close to the first resolution offered by Microsoft, with a small difference. And it worked! I will be keeping their site bookmarked in case I have any future computer annoyances.
I have to wonder, though, if this is such a common issue, why doesn't Microsoft do something about it instead of making all their customers go through some kind of work-around in order to set up networking?
