If you're a fan of Stephen Colbert and "The Colbert Report", you were on the edge of your seat Wednesday night awaiting the much anticipated interview with Virgin America CEO Richard Branson.
News was leaked a week ago about a confrontation between Colbert and Branson, in which they both threw water on the other. It made a lot of news, created a lot of hype, and brought in a lot of viewers. And, it made its rounds on America's most popular blogs.
Why did it all come together for another Colbert winner? Simple. Effective hype, and great selling:
- A little mystery to get the buzz going.
- Big names that you can't imagine doing what they said they did.
- Good natured hype from someone who is likeable, and who has the fan base to demand a large audience once the episode aired.
Sure, as a sales professional you probably don't have your own cable news TV show. But you do have an audience...you can create excitement and mystery about whatever it is that you sell...and you might even be able to make your presentations and sales experiences a little outrageous and edgy.
The interview between Colbert and Branson was a hit (you had to watch it...I'm not going to describe it). Make sure your next sales presentation has just the right amount of hype, mixed with a little mystery, and a good scoop of fun. It's a classic mixture that will improve your sales.
